Technical Editing Project- Submission Notes

1. Usernames of Editors (including yours): Parag R & mbwoote

2. Author and Title of KB Journal article edited: Divination and Mysticism as Rhetoric in the Choral Space by Grace Veach

3. Chapter or Section Edited in Richardson Manuscript: Chapter 4-Nothing but the effects of those instances of saying

4. Describe some of the challenges or questions that came up as you edited the KB Journal article.
I am honestly not sure that I understood the content of this article. This made it harder to understand what needed to be edited grammatically since I could not rely on a sentence simply not sounding right when read. I felt the need to look up almost some rule or another for every sentence, which made the editing process very time consuming and frustrating.

5. Describe some of the challenges or questions that came up as you edited the Richardson chapter or section.
This chapter was much easier to read, however I had to look up very specific formating for different types of quotes which was challenging for me because sometimes I couldn't tell what category a quote fit into. Also, this chapter had some words that I thought were made up, but as I kept reading, they kept reappearing, making me think they belonged contextually.

6. Name two "rules" that you now know that you didn't know before.
(i) I did not know that ellipses had spaces before and after them.
(ii) I have always thought that two spaces were required after a period. I learned that the proper formatting is actually a single space after the period.

7. What's one thing you learned about the tools used in technical editing?
I have never directly deleted or added changes using the MS Word editing program. Usually I just add comments about what I think should be changed. The add/delete tracking feature is much easier to use because instead of explaining what needs to be changed, I can make the change directly and have the author see what change I have made.

8. Describe one thing you've learned about the practice of technical editing.
Editing takes a lot of time and patience. As my partner and I went back and forth editing and re-editing the works piece by piece, it seemed a new error was found each time. I found myself having to read and re-read several sentences constantly in order to decide whether a change was needed, and if so, I constantly had to look up the rules in the handbook.
