Book Vignette 6

Anyone seen this commercial? It's been out for a while. A nice nod to the age of digital books and a cool look at Moby Dick...

Especially around the :50 mark

Facebook Vignette 5

Facebook... it is not a book. It isn't an e-book. It is a website. There are books out there about faces; there are books with nothing but faces; but Facebook is not a book. Now, what would be fun to do is make a book consisting of nothing but Facebook material. A book who's content is purely drawn form actual Facebook names, statuses, interests, pictures, videos (if we're thinking of an interactive e-book) etc...

Altered books are the theme of today's vignette. I was talking with one of my coworkers about a recent project of hers, an "altered book." I have never heard of them before, so when I Googled them I was very impressed. My coworker had to use a biology book and Virginia Woolf for her project. One of the first images on Google was for Alice in Wonderland

Book Vignette 7: Freshman and Textbooks

I have noticed this semester, because I am so much older and cooler as a JUNIOR (definitely joking here), that a good bit of freshman (that I see, anyways) are silly about their textbooks. They do not write in them! And they don't highlight them! I think it's funny and I kind of just want to say, "Hey! I can tell you're a freshman because that book isn't rented and you're treating it like it is!" Not really, I would never say that. But I do want to ask why.

With my extensive traveling this weekend, I thought about how people read books on airplanes. A classic use of books, yes, but I tried observing people and their habits. I discovered that it is mostly women that read on planes and it is mostly popular reading. I read on the plane, too, but only during takeoff. I do it to distract myself as we climb elevation suddenly. After that I cannot continue reading or I get motion sickness.

Book Vignette 6: Books for Pleasure

When I was an undergrad I double-majored in literature and visual arts (graphic design focus). An unforeseen consequence of taking on two majors was that I had to let one slip. So while I made sure I was an A student in English, I settled for being a B student in art. After all, art is much more subjective so I didn't feel too bad about putting less effort into it. Of course, English demanded my attention because of all the required texts I had.

Book Vignette 5: To Nook or Not to Nook, That is the Question

I really want an e-reader. But I'm pretty sure that if I get one it'll just collect dust on my desk. See, I discovered a surprising side effect of being an English major: being assigned books and other things to read makes me hate the act of reading--sad, but true. I used to blaze through at least 4 books a week until I became an English major. Now I have mounds of unread books all over my apartment because reading things like Derrida and his nonsense sap all my enthusiasm for reading.

Book Vignette 4: Critical Theory

It's amazing how one book can almost completely turn me against reading altogether. The text book for English 810, The Norton Anthology of Theory & Criticism, not so affectionately called "The Bible", is a ridiculously thick 2,758 paged tome of equally ridiculous and mostly pointless/dry/incomprehensible literary theory. I'd previously taken a critical analysis class in my undergrad and the text for that class was just shy of 400 pages.

Book Vignette 3: The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide

Douglas Adams is hands down the funniest author I've ever read. I was fifteen the first time I read The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide, which is a collection of six books, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Life, the Universe and Everything, So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish, Young Zaphod Plays it Safe, and Mostly Harmless.

I found something interesting in a bathroom stall on the first floor of the library: a book. It was Kristy's Big Day
