This week I collaborated with Trish on our showcase posters and handouts. We got everything done on Monday evening, and I had everything printed at the library.
This week I also worked on converting the Uses of Grammar text into the EPub format. Unfortunately, I ran into more issues that I originally anticipated.
During my initial export InDesign kept freezing and shutting down. A Google search revealed that this is a common issue with texts that contain footnotes (something about the superscript number InDesign uses to denote footnotes and endnotes). To rectify this I copied the information into the text itself and deleted the footnotes.
The second major issue I had trouble with was the grouped lines and shapes that I used for the diagrams. To keep InDesign from ungrouping each diagram, I had to export the diagrams as JPEG files and reinsert them into the text.
The final and most crippling issue is EPub's refusal to recognize tables. This text has a lot of tables. I still haven't found a good solution for this problem yet.
I haven't been able to produce a workable EPub file yet. While I was able to overcome some of the problems with the export, I feel like these fixes, while fine for EPub, keep the document from transitioning seamlessly from print to EPub (which is the ultimate goal, yes?).
