Project Log 11: Gaining Momentum

Lots of progress has been made. Over the break I got some preliminary slides ready for a video display of the new features being added to the Parlor Press site and I've also had a couple conceptual breakthroughs as well. Permission issues with webforms have now been solved and except for a few tweaks that are left to be made are fully functional. Permissions were attended to with a couple module additions and the use of block visibility options which are really easy to control.

Project Log 10: New Features

Things are looking tight in terms of the deadline for this project, tight but manageable. I've got a pretty good set-up right now through the webform module that is allowing me to stream all the data from any one title to the same view, and from there (hopefully) I'll be able to tweak how that data can be viewed with a few additional modules that I'll upload to the system. This is a crucial step in the project because if I can get through this info-filtering portion of development I'll have the chance to throw in a couple more cool new additions to the system.

Project Log: Week 9/Next Phase/Link in the Cycle/Chain

The Prototype for the Author Information form is up and running fairly smoothly, although, not without its hiccups. After discovering the instability of the Arrange Fields module I've had to sacrifice inline rows of data fields on forms, which means longer pages (This is a problem I fought for longer than I think I should but even after considering CSS alterations, I'm not sure that there is a good solution as of yet. For the sake of time I've moved on but I don't think this should present any major concern the form still looks good and work well enough).

Project Log: 8/New Developments

Big strides have been made toward getting conceptual models for future integrationg, and now it's finally time to start implementing some things. I've gotten the Author Information Sheet pretty well designed and the webform module has worked out well in that respect. Now, in order to move on I'm going to have to figure out how to best implement an editor's user role so that I can re-package the meta-data for books in a more pragmatic way for Parlor Press's publishing operation.

Project Log: Week 7

Progress is being made, and I've come to a point where deliverable materials are being composed. I've still got a few kinks to work out in the Author/Marketing info form's blueprint and I'm getting ready to shift over to book meta-data, which will supply the data for some new administrative forms. I also have been evaluating the CCK(content creation kit) module that comes stock with drupal 7 and I see that certain other modules need be available and enabled for CCK to be able to create the type of content that is needed.

Project Log: Week 6

After meeting with Dr. Blakesley to discuss progress, the direction of each previously assigned development cycle will be altered to yield a more conceptual product instead of being so function-focused. Because of this alteration, development cycles will now behave more like development chains, wherein ideas are strategically mapped out to ease future implementation plans for website integration.

Project Log: Week 5

After playing around with a few different methods of installation and tinkering with some of the stack applications that make running drupal possible, I finally have an up-and-running test site to use for the development of this project. I'm calling it devpress. Rather than start by building a fully-functional mirror-site for parlor press, I have decided to use a partial site consisting of mirror-pages instead. So, the homepage will serve as a simple hub for development, and the first additional page to be constructed is a replica For Authors page.

Project Log: Week 4

This weeks project log consists of development cycle designations that will correspond with the timeline I've provided for last week's log. Hopefully, these designations will make the purpose and direction of the project more accessible for anyone interested.

Development Cycle #1: This cycle will be focused mainly on the author's experience at Parlor Press and
how author/publisher interactions might be facilitated. Specifically, additions to
parlorpress.com's "For Authors" page.

Project Log Week 3

Below is a timeline for my individual project, which involves the further development of Parlor Press's website for more efficient operation.

Locked doors and lock picks, Merchants of Culture response#3

I really was not that surprised by the information in this weeks reading of Thompson's Merchants of Culture, but I will say that I think there is room for significant change within the sphere of publishing. Or should I say that there is significant change taking place within the sphere of publishing already. From a writer's perspective, what becomes abundantly clear is that the major names aren't going to always embrace new authors, and that, often time, a writer might have to suffer through some grunt work before getting the "big guys" attention.
